  4. Remove from heat and quickly stir in vanilla extract.
  5. Pour the mixture onto a prepared baking sheet and spread it out evenly.
  6. Sprinkle chocolate chips over the hot toffee and let them melt, then spread the chocolate evenly.
  7. If desired, sprinkle chopped nuts on top before the chocolate sets.
  8. Allow the toffee to cool completely before breaking it into pieces.
